Evolving Trends in Vulnerabilities & Impact During COVID

Webinar addresses unequal impact of the pandemic

The cross-specially research team launched their third live webinar event last week, with opening comments from MP Rosle Duffield and our chief executive Susan Acott.

The event focused on sharing and reviewing research evidence of how the pandemic has caused further damage to already vulnerable groups.

Director of the ethnicity and health unit at Imperial College London and medical adviser to NHS England’s workforce race equality strategy Prof Mala Rao, OBE gave an insightful and powerful keynote on racism in medicine. She told attendees that we all have the duty and influence to act on racism and help turn the moment into a movement. BMA chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul, CBE gave a presentation on an unequal NHS, disadvantaging BAME doctors, worse post pandemic compared to pre-pandemic.

Director of neuro-rehab and cross-specialty team lead Dr Mohamed Sakel introduced consultant research fellow Karen Saunders who presented preliminary data on their Black and Asian ethnicity Covid-19 research project and highlighted 16 emergent data themes, which will be incorporated into a research survey for stage two of the project.

Around 60 people joined in support with unanimous consensus that the cross-specialty team events provide a unique platform for support of diversity, inclusion, innovation and ethnicity. You can watch the video below of the full event.
